Debut novel hits the ground running

Tough talk from tough streets
By Brad Smith
The Globe and Mail

'Akler delivers the goods with originality and flare, with language as gorgeous as a Jean Harlow pin-up and dialogue sharper than than a burst from a Thompson submachine gun. To say the author owns this story would be an understatement. Some of the pickpockets' dialogue is so richly opaque and dauntingly archaic one can imagine Damon Runyon himself scratching his head upon hearing it.... This is a cocky, confident debut, Akler is a writer to watch. In racetrack parlance, he has taken on a sprint here and wired it. Can't wait to see what he does over eight furlongs.'
