Ms. Tambor, a portrait artist and theater lover, initiated the award in 2004 to create an opportunity for Edinburgh’s best shows to be seen in New York. This year’s winning play, a tense drama that explores genocide through an intricate knot of flashbacks and storytelling with a cast of six, was presented by the Canadian theater company Volcano and arrived in Edinburgh after a successful run in Toronto. “ ‘Goodness’ is a remarkably well written play,” Ms. Tambor said in a statement. “It reminds us that we cannot forget past evils; yet we cannot be quick to judge.” This year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe featured 28,014 performances of 1,867 shows at 261 sites throughout Edinburgh.
