Dec 10-18 | Camera, Woman playing at Calgary's Urban Curvz Theatre
‘There are no lost women, only women who’ve forgotten their scripts.’ In 1943, Dorothy Arzner, one of Hollywood’s few women directors, walked off the set of an unfinished film. She never returned. Based on a true story, this play explores Arzner’s complicated relationship with Golden Era studio politics, her openly lesbian lifestyle and how the two worlds may have collided in her art.
More than an insightful look at the gender politics behind the cameras of cinema’s golden age, Camera, Woman asks us to consider how we remember our icons, and at whose expense? Can Arzner ever be remembered as a director first, and a lesbian second?'
