for Nick Drake
You were a new realm of things
eyes that wouldn't close in the dark
and a mind boundless an ocean
when standing on a beach at the crack of dawn
your sloping shoulders
carried every day of your life since birth
you could've been so tall and hopeful
and I think of you today while standing
on Brighton's almost clean sand
a careless rain ruining any chance of forgiveness
behind me an ice cream van waits by the empty pier
undaunted its jingle clamors through the weather
and it's then I realize
nothing is boundless
