The Coldest Day

The way the city streets look in winter
solemn & salty & gray
adds a new dimension to the place
reveals its alter-ego
the flip side - filthy, desperate & temperamental

and sometimes beyond my window
everything looks so frozen
that if I took a hammer to it
the whole neighbourhood would smash into pieces

and what would be there, if anything
the center of the universe?
another neighbourhood?
Spring?

there's so much to be said for winter
even its little things leave a big impression
like snowflakes, frozen sentiments
the hammer I'm left holding
at the end of the coldest day
