Raising Eyebrows Raise your Eyebrows
Raising Eyebrows Gary Barwin
First There Was a Witch Hunt

first there was a witch hunt but none of the boys went
I asked the preacher and he gave me bread

a closed taste like dust
I cannot recount what once was the future
what once was

in my heart someone closed the doors
someone arrived but then left

the boys did not go to the witch hunt but stayed home in bed
I cannot recall what once I could not foresee

the preacher gave me bread and I went home and I wrote letters
in layers dear sir sincerely my condolences Jan 24th to whom it
      may I am concerned

to whom it may I knelt for three hours always hoping
to who I knelt

one of them held a lantern by which all could see
I knelt but they could not arrange it

I am sure I knew the constellation by name
I can say I only worry when I’m two-thirds dark
I can say I only worry

we all sat at the table guessing
first there was and I thought I could foresee
first there was and I thought it was possible

it was possible but the boys stayed home
someone arrived but then left

we all sat at the table guessing I knelt for three hours always hoping
