Raising Eyebrows Raise your Eyebrows
Raising Eyebrows Gary Barwin
Bone Idol

1

my bones stand staring at me
they look impressive
the light behind them

2

when did my bones leave
to consort with dogs?

3

one day tells another
‘I have been expecting you
we’re exactly alike’

4

cranium, femur, clavicle, patella
my pale bones
white with irony
blinkless as midday

5

note to myself:
cancel tomorrow’s lunch with
my ribcage
my place in the sand

6

my bones are in the mouths of dogs
running in a skeleton’s shape

my empty skin
a fleshy star

7

a television
drops from the sky
or
a hair in my eye

8

one day
blinks

night snaps
like a bone

9

my bones howl
taunt me with marimba music
head for the mountains and
never write
