Henry and Dog

a country road
a tongue
in the distance, a man attached to something
a dog
a dog attached to a man
dog and man, both walking

Henry was walking his dog
Henry’s dog was being walked
their attachment was narrow, blue, about four feet long
their attachment was not extraordinarily long
it was not an extraordinarily long blue tongue
Henry’s tongue was mild and unpresumptuous
the dog’s tongue, while presumptuous on occasion, was not
      extraordinary, though long
red, both tongues

Henry and dog: attachments: some theories:

Henry was walking his dog along a country road
along an interprovincial tongue
along the spinal cord of a dog

Henry was walking his dog
the tongue of the dog hanging out
like a long blue leash or Henry’s spinal cord
hanging down from inside his head
panting

Henry was walking along a dog
a memory dog bristling with nostalgia

the dog opens its mouth
the solar system
the galaxy
a supercluster
its mouth as big as that, and on the whole, more wet

the dog swallows

Henry’s voyage down the red tunnel
past the dog’s tonsils big as twin Jupiters

it’s starless in there, dark, vacant
Henry soon becomes bored
yawns
swallows the dog
the dog’s passage past Henry’s tonsils big as twin Saturns

inside Henry, the dog feels warm and safe
inside Henry, the dog smells familiar smells
inside Henry, the dog realizes that
it is in a dark and familiar warm-smelling place that is safe and infinite
though inside of Henry
a finite man
a dog walker

gulp
the dog swallows its own tail
Henry feels the sudden panting of nostalgia rushing up to him
brushing against his leg

it is the beginning of the universe
a dog begins to walks itself
the wet leash expanding as the universe expands
Henry’s tongue gleams bright as a new star

across the vacuum of space
the barking of the galaxy can be heard
inside the throat of a dog walker

he swallows
nostalgia comes into being
a new star lifts its leg
