Raising Eyebrows Raise your Eyebrows
Raising Eyebrows Gary Barwin
The Death of Surrealism, Pop. 768

when Surrealism died
something happened to the vet
now there are
a hundred dogs
with the identical
human face

down the street the barber
has counted
it’s 32,121 times he’s
dipped his comb in turquoise water
a hundred humans with the identical
dog face

my old Rex
had a smile like a deckchair
Tommy at the diner says
he’s been gone these ten years but
imagine time was
a perfect circle with no centre
just like this donut here
that’d make old Rex and me both
nervous Rex

it starts to rain
someone folds
the deckchair in a hurry
makes like ducks inside

in the middle of the downpour
there’s Freddy at the end of the street
the history of Surrealism is
a long
skin
lime
he barks at the bandshell

in the beauty parlour Janette is melting
watching Freddy
tomorrow she will eat
the piano
dog by
identical
dog
