Space Reservations For Four

1   elbows
knees
ankles
wrists
the space program needs me

2 bluebells
daisies
daffodils
i was eaten by
a bear later made into
a rug

3 watching the rug's owner was like
watching tv
later, i climbed out of the bear
began to sing

4 O i sang
and my mouth was an O
actually
it was the wind
that was making the sound
blowing past my mouth
as if it were an open cave
and in the mouth of the cave
there was a bear
the bear turned to his brother bear
lying on a rock at the back of the cave, said
one day
some of us bears will go up to that round glinting thing
as if we were salmon going upstream
our brains illuminated with one thought only
we'll probably become
weightless
hairless
snatching at it as if it were indeed
a fish

5 what'd we do if we got it?
the brother bear said
but before there was time for an answer
i drew a little diagram in the sand on the cave's floor
the cave that was really
my mouth
did i draw the diagram with my tongue?

6 maybe

7 did the particles of sand know that they'd formed
part of a large
diagram there in the wet red cave
past the mouth of which
the wind blew
sounding as if it were me singing
having emerged from under the skin of the bear
that had eaten me
and that had subsequently been made into a rug?

8 i don't think so

9 life, then, is a naked chair
talking to another naked chair
at the back of a cave

did i say chair?
i meant bear
it's just they both have four legs
are flat, hard, easy to sit on, and
like life,
brandish their teeth when
approaching an intersection

send this to the space program at once
there are astronauts sitting in bears
waiting
