Jesse

He looms above her along the bone of a log,
his head already free, his tiny naked body
still wedged between the mountains across the lake.
His mother frowns from where she suns on the sand
as nearing he begins to ascend. She calls him - 'Jesse!' -
but he pretends that's not his name
and smiles down - his blue eyes
weeping of their own accord.
